What you wear to your maternity session can make or break the images — and it is one of the questions I get asked most. The good news is that you do not need to overthink it. Here are my top tips for choosing an outfit that photographs beautifully and makes you feel incredible in front of the camera.

Use My Wardrobe

Before you stress about shopping, know that I have a full maternity wardrobe available at no extra cost. Long flowing gowns in cream, blush, sage, white, and deep wine are all available in multiple sizes. Many clients try on several options at the start of the session and find something they love immediately. If you want to use my wardrobe just let me know when you book and we will plan the look together.

Colors That Work Best

Neutral and soft tones photograph the most beautifully against both studio backgrounds and outdoor settings. Cream, white, blush, dusty rose, sage green, soft terracotta, and warm tan are all excellent choices. These tones let the light wrap around you naturally and keep the focus on you and your bump. Bold patterns, bright neons, and busy prints tend to pull focus away from the emotion in the images.

Fabric Makes a Difference

Flowy, soft fabrics like chiffon, jersey, and lace photograph beautifully and move gracefully. Structured, stiff fabrics tend to feel and look forced. For studio sessions I love a form-fitting stretch dress that shows off the bump. For outdoor sessions a long flowing gown with movement is magical, especially in a breeze.

What About Your Partner

For partners, simple and coordinating is the goal. A white or cream linen button-down with neutral trousers is timeless. Avoid matching too literally — complementary tones look more natural than identical outfits. Dark jeans and a simple shirt in a muted color also work well for a more casual feel.

Comfort Matters

You will be moving, posing, and standing for an extended period. Make sure whatever you wear is comfortable and does not restrict movement. If you are uncomfortable you will look uncomfortable — and we want you relaxed and glowing.
