First birthdays deserve their own celebration — and a cake smash session is one of the most joyful, laugh-filled ways to mark the milestone. If you have never done one before, here is exactly what to expect when you book a cake smash session in Tampa with Karissa Leigh Designs.
What Is a Cake Smash Session
A cake smash session is a milestone portrait session where your one-year-old gets to dig into a birthday cake — usually in the most gloriously messy way possible. The images are fun, genuine, and full of personality. Every baby reacts differently. Some dive in headfirst. Some poke cautiously. Some decide they would rather eat the balloon. All of it makes for incredible photos.
What We Provide
My Tampa studio provides the backdrop, balloon arrangements, props, and session styling. The only thing you need to bring is the cake — a simple 6-inch smash cake works best — and a change of clothes for your little one, plus a onesie for bath-time photos if you would like those at the end of the session.
Styling Your Session
We will talk through your vision before your session date. Whether you want soft neutrals and simple elegance, bold bright colors, a themed setup, or something seasonal, I love helping families design a look that feels personal. Popular styles include boho cream and blush, primary colors with bold balloons, and holiday themed setups for December birthdays.
When to Book
I recommend scheduling your cake smash session right around your child's first birthday — typically within a week or two on either side. Many families book a combined sitter session at around 6 to 9 months and a cake smash at 12 months to capture the full first year. Ask about bundle pricing when you book.
Tips for the Day
Come with a well-rested, recently fed baby. A tired or hungry one-year-old is less likely to enjoy the experience. Bring two or three changes of clothes — things get messy fast. And most importantly, come ready to laugh. The messier it gets, the better the photos.
Ready to celebrate the big one? Let's make it a session your family will never forget.
