Appleton WI newborn photography - baby girl with white bow headband

Those first days with a new baby are an extraordinary mix of overwhelming love and total exhaustion. Before you know it, that brand new tiny person has changed and grown and those very first moments are a memory. A newborn session exists to freeze time just long enough for you to hold onto this chapter forever. If you are preparing for your Appleton newborn session, here is everything you need to know.

The Best Time to Schedule

Newborn sessions work best within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. In this early window babies sleep deeply, curl naturally into those adorable tucked poses, and still carry that brand new softness in their features. I recommend booking your session during your second trimester so a date is already reserved. Once baby arrives we adjust the timing to fit within the ideal window.

How Long to Allow

My newborn sessions in Appleton are unhurried. I block 2 to 3 hours for each session though some run a little shorter depending on baby. Feeding breaks, settling time, and outfit changes are all built into the flow. There is no clock running. Your baby leads and I follow.

Everything Is Provided

You do not need to bring a single prop or wrap. My Appleton studio is fully stocked with wraps, hats, headbands, flokati rugs, baskets, buckets, blankets, and a wide variety of props in neutral and soft tones. You are welcome to bring anything personally meaningful — a family heirloom, a tiny outfit that has been passed down, or a meaningful keepsake you want included.

What to Wear

Simple and soft is the goal. Cream, white, tan, blush, and muted earth tones keep the focus on your baby and photograph beautifully. Avoid logos, bold patterns, or anything too structured. Most parents opt for comfortable layers they do not mind sitting on the floor in. You will be leaning in close to your baby for much of the session and comfort matters.

Keeping Baby Happy

A full and sleepy baby is the easiest baby to photograph. Try to time a feeding for right before you arrive, or plan to feed upon arrival before we begin. The studio is kept warm to keep baby comfortable during unclothed poses, and soft white noise plays throughout the session to help everyone stay calm and settled.

Siblings Are Welcome

Sibling images are some of the most treasured from any newborn gallery. I recommend having a second adult bring older children partway through the session — we will capture sibling moments first, then they can head out for a snack while we wrap up with baby. It keeps everyone happy and the images look genuinely relaxed.

Have questions before your session? I am always happy to chat through the details.
